About the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Elective Application Process

The Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Office of Medical Education welcomes interested students to apply for our high-yield clinical and/or research electives at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. All electives are considered a competitive process where students demonstrating the strongest academic achievement and interest in developing a career in pediatrics will be given priority. Electives are also subject to availability by dates. 

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS: Only the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Office of Medical Education can give students approval for a clinical or research elective experience. Although Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital physicians, staff or employees may encourage students toward an elective experience, final approval will be determined following completion of our application process as outlined below.  

  • We encourage advanced planning for students and trainees in applying for and planning an elective experience. 
  • We encourage interested students to review the appropriate student criteria section below prior to submitting an application to determine your eligibility for an elective. 

Graduate Medical Education (GME) trainees are urged to work with their local program directors months in advance of their desired elective experience(s). A minimum of a 90 day advance lead time is required to allow for application processing including meeting the mandatory requirements from the Florida Board of Medicine.

For undergraduate or medical students, a minimum of a 45 day advance lead time is required to allow for application processing. All requests for student’s preferred dates will be taken into consideration but cannot be guaranteed due to variations in faculty availability and scheduling.

Application Criteria for medical students from LCME Accredited North American medical schools for experiences at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital: 

  • Student applications will not be reviewed until all official documents (including original medical school transcripts mailed directly from the medical school) and other required documentation have been received.  
  • Students are eligible for a clinical or research elective if they are currently enrolled in a medical school program and in good standing (and have not yet graduated from medical school). 
  • Cumulative GPA 3.5 is required.
  • Clinical elective experiences are approved for a minimum of 1 week.
  • Once a student is approved and scheduled from an experience through the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Office of Medical Education, he/she will be required to complete the experience in the assigned clinical setting with assigned faculty. 

Application Criteria for students from Non- LCME Accredited North American Institutions (including osteopathic schools) for experiences at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital: 

  • Student applications will not be reviewed until all official documents (including original medical school transcripts mailed directly from the medical school) and other required documentation have been received.  
  • Students are eligible for a clinical or research elective if they are currently enrolled in a school program and are in good standing (and have not yet graduated). 
  • Cumulative GPA 3.5 is required.
  • Clinical elective experiences are approved for a minimum of 2 weeks.
  • Eligible students will be required to complete a video interview with our office staff as part of the application process.
  • Once a student is approved and scheduled for an experience through the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Office of Medical Education, he/she will be required to complete the experience in the assigned clinical setting with assigned faculty. 

Application Criteria for International Medical Students for experiences at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital: 

  • Student applications will not be reviewed until all official documents (including original medical school transcripts mailed directly from the medical school) and other required documentation have been received.  
  • Students are eligible for a clinical or research elective if they are currently enrolled in a medical school program and are in good standing (and have not yet graduated from medical school).   
  • Eligible students will be required to complete a video interview with our office staff as part of the application process.
  • Cumulative GPA 3.5 is required.
  • Clinical elective experiences are approved for a minimum of 3 weeks and a maximum of 6 weeks.
  • Once a student is approved and scheduled for an experience through the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Office of Medical Education, he/she will be required to complete the experience in the assigned clinical setting with assigned faculty.

International Medical Graduate:

  • If the student applies for an elective within 2 years of graduation from medical school and meet above criteria for International Medical Students (above), he/she will be eligible for research/scholastic electives only. 

Application criteria for undergraduate students for experiences at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital: 

  • Student applications will not be reviewed until all official documents (including original school transcripts mailed directly from the undergraduate school) and other required documentation have been received.  
  • Students are eligible for a clinical or research elective if enrolled in a current undergraduate program and are in good standing (and have not yet graduated).
  • Students must be entering their junior year or higher. Submitted applications from students in their first year of college will not be reviewed
  • Cumulative GPA 3.5 is required.
  • Students must be able to dedicate at least one full week to the experience. Two weeks are preferred, and these candidates will receive priority in being assigned an elective.  
  • Once a student is approved and scheduled for an experience through the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Office of Medical Education, he/she will be required to complete the experience in the assigned clinical setting with assigned faculty. 

High School Students

  • Due to increasing demand for clinical elective experiences for various learners, the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Office of Medical Education does not provide clinical elective experiences to high school students.  Submitted applications from high school students will not be reviewed.

FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS ONLY: Your medical school registrar's office will also need to complete the following form to initiate the application process (not applicable for undergraduate students applying for electives):

Once our office has received the following documents, we will begin reviewing your request:

  1. Your online request form
  2. Above completed documents and
  3. Your Official Transcript
  4. Medical Elective Form (Medical Students)

Secondary process:

Following initial review of your application materials, our office will determine preliminary eligibility for the rotation. If approved for the elective rotation, you will be asked to submit the following items to complete the application and approval process:
